Sugar Hill: Harlem's Historic Neighborhood (2014)
Sugar Hill: Harlem's Historic Neighbo...
About book: Great book to connect kids to so many great artists (musical, literary, and so on) and activist thinkers who they may know of but not know this common denominator. Art is engaging and truly illustrative of the persons. Author's notes and Who's who in the back are simple and informative. IB PYP: inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers, communicators, principled, open-minded, caring, risk-takers, balanced, reflective. This will be a fun and interesting book to build multi-media support around. Truly fabulous illustrations, and truly great intentions. An excellent educational tool for any kid learning about the Harlem Renaissance...but for me, it didn't work as a book to be read for pleasure. There's no real narrative, just scene-setting. No real characters, just a parade of dropped names. And worst of all, it's written in rhyme but many of the lines don't scan. They don't come off as jazzy or syncopated -- just as bad rhymes. But as part of a curriculum or for a kid visiting Harlem? You bet.
Great artwork, nice rhyming scheme and good historical notes at the end made me happy.
Cute and love the information in the back including the names of famous people.
Wow illustrations!! Wow.
